Bone x-ray is performed to get images of any bone in any part of the body. This determines the problems in a bone at a very basic level making it the fastest way of diagnosing the issue.
Bone x-ray is performed to:
Determine the reason for any bone pains.
Check up for any fractures in a bone.
Determine any bone dislocation or injury.
Guide orthopedic surgery such as spine repair/fusion, joint replacement and fracture reductions.
Assess any bone cancer.
Detect abnormal bone growths, infection, arthritis.
Detecting unknown objects in soft tissues around or in bones.
Women should tell their doctors if there is any chance they may be pregnant because x-ray radiation can harm the baby. If in doubt, make sure to take a pregnancy test before performing the scan. If positive, consult your doctor.
You are encouraged to drink only clear liquids a day before your scan and avoid milk products.
Wear comfortable clothing and avoid jewellery or any other metal on the body.
Inform if you have an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted for pregnancy prevention.
You will be asked to lie/sit on a padded table or stand depending on the bones to be assessed.
It’s important that you stay very still. You may be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds during the time in which the image is obtained.
