How is a Renal Cortical scan done?

We use a radioactive material (tracer) to produce 2D and 3D images of organs and areas within the body. The changes that take place are recorded in a sequential manner. The process you will follow when you go for a Renal Cortical scan is as follows:

  • When you enter, registration is done and you need to share all your required medical history. The procedure will be explained to you and you may clear all your queries.

  • Ater completing all the queries, your Patient Care Coordinator will explain the procedure of the scan to parents and all children old enough to understand..

  • Children should be reassured by their parents in every step by continuous communication, as their cooperation is necessary for a successful scan

  • The nurse then places a cannula in your vein to prepare for the radiotracer injection. In case of performing the serum creatinine and blood sugar tests, the nurse will take a sample for it from the same cannula. This helps in avoiding repeated needle pricks for the patients. Depending on the type of scan, she might also ask you to drink some medicated water.
  • There is a waiting period for 3 hours after injection for the radiotracer to get absorbed to the essential areas for the scan.
  • After the waiting period, the patient will be taken inside the gamma scan room to lie on the bed which will be moved into the machine for the scan. You will be monitored through a CCTV / glass screen.

  • Emission from the tracer is detected by the scanner and high-quality images are produced by the machine. Imaging generally takes around 25-30 minutes. Various nuclear scans have different waiting periods.

  • After the scan, you will be kept under observation in case any delayed scan is required after the initial scan is reviewed by a Nuclear Medicine physician.

  • After receiving a clearance from the reviewing Nuclear Medicine physician you will be advised to leave with some safety instructions.
  • You will be aou will be advised to stay away from other children and pregnant women for 24 hours and to drink lots of water/fluid after the scan to flush out the radiotracer through urine.

After the scan:

  • Patients can eat, drink and take medication.

  • Patient is required to be under observation in the clinic for approximately half an hour after the scan, till the concerned staff confirms.

  • It is best for the patient not to be close to children or pregnant women for the rest of the day to avoid exposing them to any radiation.

  • The radiotracer leaves the patient’s body through urine or stool till 10-12 hours after the scan. Patient should drink a lot of water to help flush it out.
